lil’ monstaz: checkin’ de mix with tascam vl-m3’s

really, i have found that everything translates to mastering nicely with a combination of genelec/focal/car speaks but i have been missing the days of referencing via boomboxes. i.e. 3″ speaks can solve as many mix-related mishaps as checking them in mono.

i just stumbled on these little tascam vl-m3 babies and was surprised, wait, blown away at the sum total.

need some tiny mons to check finals before printing? need some cheap but sex-ellent nearfields for location mixes? hell, need some computer speakers that don’t suck (or cost $700)? damn!

well tascam/teac professional has got you covered with this tiny but very mighty package. and at $80 you can buy back-ups or just put them everywhere. my first impressions: heavy (a very good sign), a solid build and a very flat response. holy fucking shit, the specs claim 45 Hz. i actually passed a 42Hz tone and heard bottom. wtf? how is this possible?! nice.

full disclosure: at the bottom 1/3 of the output only. don’t expect party volumes. and may i remind you these are 3″ drivers! also, no covers, so keep these away from dogs/cats/kids/fuckheads to insure no punctured drivers.

a couple of “cons”:

  1. they are not shielded but at 12W/channel, just move them a couple of feet away from your hard drives etc., keep ’em halfway or below for an accurate representation of your mix.
  2. i have heard that the quality control is not “the best,” so even though i got lucky, audition a few pairs. i bought the additional 2-year warranty from my local proprietor, just to be on the safe side.

sometimes cheap doesn’t = shit.
